Hi Rad,
I'm thinking about how in Rome there was such a strong emphasis on the Vestal Virgins doing everything right. this, along with their sacrosanct status and need to be "untouchable" sexually. There was such a strong emphasis on physical perfection and accuracy. And I know that expression is very different than how the Vesta archetype showed up in matriarchal times.
The Vesta role is essential to making sure the work is being done on behalf of the whole that it serves. Keeping the hearth flame going, keeping the candles lit, tending to the sacred space etc ...
I am just wondering if you have found there to be any issues with neurosis or perfectionism within the Vesta archetype?
Vesta for me resonates with the Priestess archetype who is a bit detached, and the shadow side of this could be perfectionism, coldness, etc. My own Vesta in Libra certainly feels this way.
I have heard that Vesta could be considered te 'ruler' of Virgo, which makes sense to me. ( oh I am sorry, that is Ceres) I have Vesta in Taurus in the 6th... I love nature and enjoy it fully, but, I could be a bit alof regarding more 'futile' things like money and clothing when I am not in alignment.
Hi Ari,
I really have never really focused on Vesta in the work I have done in EA relative to working with clients. Of course the natural role of women and mothers was very different in natural times prior to the transition in the patriarchal times we are still living within.
Rome and its orientation to Vesta via the vestal virgins stuff reflects its own reality but that is only one culture among many coming through these patriarcha ltimes. Relative to the patriarchy in general all the various cultures, and their religions, have had all kinds of conditioning affects upon the natural archetypes of women, and men too, and the consequences of that conditioning.
God Bless, Rad
I understand them to be the "Keepers of the Sacred Flame" of Sacred Sexuality, just as Vesta is. Initators of young men who were coming of age. They have of course been transformed in the public eye by the Patriachy over thousands of years into something less than Saced Prostitues, just as our relatioonship with sexual experience has been transformed (informed ) in the same way. Everything has its place in time and its no wonder interest in the archetype of Vesta and those who "held" her energies, is gaining popularity and interest again as we step into different times. I stood within the runis of the Temple of Vesta in the Form, in Rome some years ago. It held a deepening kind of energy as I experienced it, and a peacefullness that was seperate from the crowds of people only 20 meters away. Or maybe I just projected all of that onto it while I was there? Who knows? But I wonder.
I am new and am happy to have Vesta be my first topic to comment on. Vesta, Persephone, and my sun are at 27 degrees Virgo. I have been interested in both for decades.
Vesta and her Greek equivalent, Hestia, are temple goddesses in charge of everyday spiritual practices—maintaining the fire that provides physical and spiritual warmth.
Vesta and the Vestal Virgins took no part in wars, did not seek recognition, and did not need or seek a man to complete them or give them status. Their primary role was to be sisters of the sacred flame. They are whole unto themselves.
I believe Vesta represents devotion—to the community, her sisterhood/family, and her inner work.
Hi Ari,
I know you have asked this to Rad, so my apologies to jump in.
But since this is becoming a topic which more people are responding and the love i have for Vesta i am reposting Mary's reply when we talked about it awhile ago in the analisis of Lilith in the chart - undistorted masculine thread:
"The new state of Wholeness incorporates attributes or skills of the Sacred Feminine, such as nurturer or protectress, that reflect the particular goddess’ nature developed for integration by the Soul during its Earthly tutorial process. Each Soul will have archetypally a particular affinity for one or another of the goddesses depending on their nature and desired evolutionary lessons to be learned, all of which are determined by analysis of their signatures emphasized within the natal chart.
With respect to all that, the goddess Vesta to me is pure devotion, directed with passion and heart upon anything she touches. As priestess she symbolizes the purity of intention that reflects the innate purity of the Soul itself, of consciousness in its primal state. The Soul infused with the archetype of Vesta is fully qualified as you so beautifully describe to be the guide for “the way, the process, the ritual, we can devote ourselves to tend this sacred fire of the Center”. Through the symbol of the flame itself, she reflects the Soul’s Essence, as the light of eternal and infinite Spirit. She, who gives of herself entirely to whatever she focuses upon with heart and Soul, surely must be the same entrusted to tend the sacred inner fire at Center. So wherever Vesta goes, Lilith follows, receiving Vesta’s teachings for their eventual integration into conscious realization as an aspect of the Sacred Feminine. Each teaching reflects the Soul’s primal purity executed with devotion through Vesta’s various archetypal signatures."
I wonder if purity and devotion in its natural expression can sometimes appear has the perfectionism you identify, if misplaced. (as a side note, i would be careful with the term neurosis when it comes for example to the charts of women as it relates to natural expression of vesta because that has been frequently a label used to disqualify women's inner knowing, well i mean, not that's what you are saying but just to make sure we can have that in mind as for the natural expression)
Hope it adds value,
Helena
