Anandamayi Ma comes from the Shakti tradition of India wherein the feminine or Goddess is the ultimate cause of Creation. She was married to her husband at the age of 13. His name was Ramani Mohan Chakrabarti whom she renamed Bholanath.
As you know he attempted to have sex with her that was met with electrical strikes that emanated from her body that stopped him in his tracks. From that point forwards he took a vow of silence. In their context and tradition that vow was a means of spiritual discipline and SELF CONTROL. They also believed that by remaining silent the Soul could detach from external distractions from the material world and thus focus on the inner self.
