Hi there everyone. I am hoping someone can help me. I distinctly remember JWG speaking to the harm that can come from telling clients that due to cause and effect, our Souls have chosen trauma and pain. It's much more complex than that, but I am having trouble finding his quote(s) on this matter and I would like to use them in an article I am writing about the Soul's journey in physicality and the harmful bypassing that can occur when we buy into new age sentiments like this. Thanks to anyone who can help find quotes from the man himself.

Here's what I found:
PLUTO - SOUL - SOUL EVOLUTION - EVOLUTIONARY NECESSITY - KARMA - POLARITY POINT - NODES - NODE RULERS
We now go through an entire review of all the Pluto ideas that are reflected in the book. My approach is that we assume that you never even read the book. There is some new information that is not in the book that is specific to the Four Natural Evolutionary Conditions. This is the heart of the material of course, and this is what is going to produce evolutionary astrologers, hopefully.
Now what we are dealing with here is the nature of the Soul, i.e. from life to life. And Pluto has a very specific correlation to what we call Soul. The Soul has been a word in all languages since the human evolution. And in this type of country at this point in time, for the last 20 - 30 years the notion of the Soul, the idea of the Soul, has been in the vocabulary amongst people in a very large way. But the real question becomes what actually is a Soul? First of all, we've already understood that it is pure energy. And it is certainly a vortex of energy within consciousness.
And just as physicists rightfully point out, energy cannot be destroyed, it can only change form. That would seem to me the greatest argument for reincarnation as possible, from a physicist's point of view.
Now, the Soul can be generally defined, following this physicist's idea, as an immutable consciousness. Immutable here means that which cannot be destroyed. And within that immutable consciousness, called the Soul, there is a dynamic that is the causal factor in its evolution from life to life. And that dynamic is rooted in the archetype of desire. Now, within the Soul (keep in mind how this perfectly reflects the law of polarization or polarity, night/day, yin/yang) there are two opposite or antithetical desires. One desire is to separate away from that which has created the Soul in the first place (we can use the generalized term, God), and one desire is to return to that which has created the Soul. You can see how these desires go in opposite directions. And this is the very basis, the dynamic, the law, of what psychologists will call free choice. It is determined by the nature of desire. The evolution of the Soul is simply based on a progressive elimination of all separating desires. Separating desires are only limited by that what you can imagine, which is exactly why it takes so darned long to exhaust such desires to the exclusion of one desire only, which is the desire to reunite with the source or God.
Now this simple truth is the very basis of Buddha's enlightenment under the famous Bodhi tree, as he pondered the nature of sorrow and pain. And as he pondered this, he rapidly realized that it was desire as the causal factor in anything that can be described as misery, pain or suffering. And this promoted his enlightenment.
So desire is the determinant, the causal factor, in evolution. This simple truth can be empirically validated by every human being on earth, i.e. beyond astrology. Is it not true that all of us here in this room can have whatever types of desire – the new lover, the new position, the new objective, and so on. And we may have the capacity to act upon and actualize whatever these separating desires may be. And as we do so, we do in fact have a momentary sense of satisfaction. But then, what soon replaces the psychological experience of satisfaction? It is the sense of dissatisfaction or something more. It is the sense of psychological dissatisfaction that mirrors the desire to return to the source. All of us have this experience. It is universal.
Keep in mind the core point: astrology can only reflect life, not cause it. Moses himself, who was in fact a master astrologer, said the following "Astrology is a symbolic language of God." So the dynamic within the Soul that promotes the cause of evolution is, in fact, the principle of desire.
Now the principle of evolution itself, the idea of, the reality of, also correlates with the symbol of Pluto. Evolution, from the point of view of time/space, is non-debatable. The simplest proof of this is, all of our experience, universal, is always in a continuous state of becoming. Nobody can debate this. And therefore you have evolution.
I want to say this thought in order to counteract some of the thoughts channeled through Jane Roberts relative to Seth. The delusion in these thoughts is that somehow reality is existing simultaneously, that reality (past, present, future) is existing simultaneously. Now you have to try and realize that this entity called Seth is speaking from a universe called the Causal Universe. And from the point of view of the Causal Universe, this statement is absolutely true. But, in fact, this is not the Causal Universe, this is the Material Universe. From the point of view of the Material Universe, at this point in evolution, that statement is not true. If it was true, we would find the Dinosaur sitting right next to us. And the other delusive thought from the point of view of the Material Universe that is also promoted in these teachings, is that somehow we can create any reality that we so desire. This is also pure bullshit. In each life you have a parameter of what is possible and what is not. And within those parameters you have free choice. A simple example. I can sit here and decide I want to be President of the United States. But if it is not within my parameters (that which is possible), you think it is really going to happen just because I desire it?
In any case, Pluto does in fact correlate with the notion and idea, reality, of evolution. And of course there are two kinds of evolution. From the Darwinian point of view it is called the Theory of Uniformity, which is slow yet progressive change, i.e. the state of becoming, non-cataclysmic, non-severe. And on the other hand, there is, of course, cataclysmic evolution. Forms of cataclysmic evolution as seen from the point of view of natural history or natural science: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, massive weather destruction. For those who go through it, it is cataclysmic.
From the point of view of human science, there are certainly many forms of cataclysmic events that the Soul can create for itself. Take the example of ex-president Nixon. I think most of us would agree that for him personally, Watergate and the removal of Presidency was certainly a cataclysmic event. And I would say, from the point of view of the collective consciousness, the American people at that time, this was a cataclysmic event, the impact of which we are still experiencing i.e. the fundamental skepticism of the general American populace relative to politics.
Another example. You are sitting in your home, quite comfortable, and your partner comes home and says, "Guess what, buddy, I am attracted to somebody else. And I already slept with him!" This would be cataclysmic from an emotional point of view, at least for most of us, unless you are a masochist. Or the unexpected death of a loved one. Or reaching a state economically in life in which you finally go bankrupt. And so on.
Most of our lives, from life to life, are primarily, from the point of view of evolution, uniform. Slow progressive change, with a few cataclysmic events mixed in. Who in this room has not experienced a cataclysmic event in your life, in this life? But, on balance, wouldn't you also say that most of your life is not cataclysmic, with a few sprinkled in events? Or, we could say birth is a cataclysmic event.
The question becomes, "Why in the world have any cataclysmic event?" What is the causal factor here? There are, in fact, two causes. One cause is rooted, goes right back to the central idea, reality, of our need to feel secure. Again, security is defined by that which has come before, the need to be self-consistent. So that, when change becomes necessary, the tendency in the human being (we are talking about big change, not these little changes) is to resist (Pluto) that necessary change. Why? Security is being threatened. When evolution becomes imperative, i.e. if the Soul is trying to accomplish something in whatever area, and if that Soul continues to resist that necessary change at the moment that it is necessary, then a cataclysmic event will occur in order to force that evolution. Now, cataclysmic events of this type will lead to accelerated mutational evolutionary change. Rarely in the middle of a cataclysmic event does the Soul or the person (Pluto) understand why. During a cataclysmic event there tends to be a loss (Pluto) of perspective. The "why" does not seem to be present. For those who have gone through cataclysmic events in this life: did you understand why, when it was happening? Most people do not.
There are two reasons for this. One, it is actually a teaching unique to the Soul i.e. going to key points in which the sense of being able to control one's life or destiny is lost. Meaning, there seems to be some higher power or force or energy that seems to be in control of these events, that you yourself can no longer control. That is trying to remind the Soul that there is something higher than itself. In other words, the loss of contral must occur in order to re... At same other point, when the cataclysm is over, i.e. when evaluation has taken place, brand-new perspectives will emanate from that event, new understandings. Something has fundamentally changed here.
The other cause of cataclysmic events are karmic causes. When a cataclysmic event is karmically determined, or when an evolutionary shift is determined to occur by the Soul and there is a resistance to that event or change, the cataclysm is going to occur. The latter comes into the category which is called evolutionary necessity. Try to understand that evolutionary necessity is fundamentally different than karmic requirement. Evolutionary necessity and karmic requirement or cause, which are determined, do equal the phenomena of fate. 20% of any of our lives is fated. Fate simply means that something is fated to occur. No matter what you do, it is going to occur.
Now, karmic cause is simple. I am going to spend same time on it because it is not quite as linear as you think. From the linear point of view it is this simple: karma is simply action leading to proportionate reaction. If I go out and kill somebody this minute, I have set in motion a cause, which will have an equal reaction. So, either I get killed in the next minute, two years from now, or in another life. The problem occurs when the karmic reaction occurs in another life, because at that paint the Soul has already forgotten. So when this occurs, it stands back and goes, "Why is this happening?" It can't remember any more. This becomes a potential cause in the consciousness of victimization. In other words, there are karmic causes that can lead to cataclysmic events. But karma is not just limited to this linear "action equaling proportionate reaction". A typical American, as an example, would sit around and go, "OK, if I was abused as a child, then I must have been an abuser as a parent before", and limit their understanding of these issues to that kind of thing. I think that mast of us in this room would agree that this is pretty limited thinking. Because there is also a thing called evolutionary necessity.
Example: what if a given person, through their evolution, created a situation over a series of lifetimes where all they consciously desired was to fully embrace and disseminate spiritual reality, and while so desiring said, "I am not going to deal with anything of an emotional nature. I am just going to stop the emotion, pretend I am not there, transcend them!", and all these happy words. From an evolutionary point of view that will constitute skipped steps. From the point of view of evolutionary necessity, then, at a certain point in that person's incarnational history, they are going to have to recover that skipped step, which will then become the causal factor in evolutionary necessity. So at that point it might set in motion a series of lives in which, in order to recover those emotional skipped steps (based on the original denial), that would naturally lead into a series of lives in which the circumstances igniting that emotional reality, in all likelihood would be quite severe. This could become a causal factor in being born into a family in which it experienced psychological, emotional, and sexual abuse, as an example. From the point of view of evolutionary necessity. And therefore the Soul simply picking the parental type in which that would naturally occur. Which then does not mean there is specific karma between that Soul and the parents it has chosen.
Now this point is incredibly important to grasp, because all too often the client comes into a counseling astrologer who has this limited thinking, reporting his/her story, and the astrologer goes: "Well...!". The astrologer now doing this trip on the client, promoting wrong information. And now the person is walking out the door thinking that they had done something which they had not done. Do you see the deal here? So this point is critical, absolutely critical. The critical point is to understand the difference between evolutionary necessity and karmic causes. So the logical question becomes: how can you know the difference?
From the point of view of astrology: now there is a chart in front of you, now there is a client in front of you. The answer can be determined in a variety of ways, actually. First of all, let's just run with this scenario: a person incarnates, they come into an environment, they are let's say sexually or psychologically abused by one or both parents. At that point you now have to have the parental birth data. Because you will see in the second segment of this course (next time, when we focus entirely on relationships: synastry charts, composite charts), there are many many rules that will help you to totally determine not only the past-life background that exists between you and a member, but also if in fact there is this kind of negative or difficult karma existing in this scenario between that person and the parent. Next time you will see these rules are incredible and really extensive. And if those rules, those parameters, are not fitting them, then you know you have evolutionary necessity. This material and the information at that level, i.e. how to determine specific past life linkage, is all in the forthcoming second volume of "Pluto". That is in no other book. So, Pluto correlates with the notion of evolution, the principle of evolution, the reality of evolution. There are two types: uniform and cataclysmic.
When you look at your birth chart, Pluto is in a house and sign somewhere. What that Pluto in house and sign is telling you, is what the prior life evolutionary desires have been. Meaning where you see Pluto in the chart, you can assume that that Soul has been living within that self definition for a series of lifetimes, and at birth will naturally orientate to that dynamic.
Let's say Pluto in 9, individuated. A series of lives trying to understand cosmological reality, and its place in the cosmos. For evolution to proceed, the core intention and first cause of the birth, the reason for the birth, is simply determined by the polarity point in the opposite house and sign of Pluto. As that new polarity point is moved towards and embraced, this will simultaneously rebirth the natal dynamic reflected in the natal Pluto. The Pluto at birth (house and sign) has been a series of lives defining itself in that way. However, there is a Pluto limitation, there is an implied limitation there. Example, Pluto in the ninth - a series of lives trying to understand itself in the cosmos, trying to embrace various belief systems, various philosophies, in order to understand this. However, from the point of view of the 9th house, it is limited, meaning it has only embraced a portion of the truth, and not the whole truth. And, relative to Pluto's modus operandi or pathology, it will defend that truth to everyone, in order to have Soul power, Soul validation, Soul validity.
So in this case, the polarity point would be the 3rd house. The simple translation (keeping in mind the Soul is also analogous to a computer), the Soul will simply program circumstances in the current life that equal necessary intellectual and philosophical confrontations with key people who are more intellectually or philosophically evolved than itself. People who have the capacity to find the weak link in its most well-thought-out philosophical argument. And by finding the weak link, the whole argument collapses. And that would then mean the Soul is trying to embrace more and more ideas, more of the whole truth. Through the nature of the program, which then rebirths, expands, evolves, metamorphoses the existing limitations in the 9th house Pluto. So here again you see a happy reflection of the law of the trinity.
We have the natal orientation (1), the polarity point then generating the evolution (2), and the metamorphosis of the existing limitations (3). This is God's happy law. It is really simple. Wherever that natal Pluto is represents a whole past life series of developments, and the person has to find himself in that way in a series of lifetimes that create a natural limitation - Pluto. Pluto is the nature of limitations. The polarity point is demonstrating how those limitations can change - polarity house. Which then simultaneously expand and metamorphose the existing limitations of that natal position of Pluto. It's the Law of the Trinity. So the first cause in the birth then is determined by the opposite house and sign of Pluto.
Now here is an interesting thing to think about. Most of us are aware that there are millions of people born with Pluto in the same sign. Apart from the common generational application, why is it that God has created the situation where millions of people have Pluto in the same sign? The answer is really simple. It takes more than one person to accomplish the evolutionary intentions on the planet. Simple example: we all are aware that we are moving towards the Aquarian Age (like it or not!), and all of us are aware that progressively the Pluto in Leo crowd are coming into positions of social power and status, as is Clinton (the first president who has Pluto in Leo). The polarity point for this generation is Aquarius. Coincidence or synchronicity? Similarly in Jesus' time. He said that he was here to usher in a new age, called the Pisces Age. Guess where his Pluto was? Virgo. Coincidence or synchronicity?
Now, wherever your natal Pluto is, your entire generation of Pluto's land in that house of yours. Think about it! Now there is an instinct in the human consciousness to separate (Mars) from everything that it is not, in order to discover its individuality. Now the entire generation impacting on your natal Pluto, relative to the instinct in consciousness to separate, that automatically stimulates the polarity point! Isn't that magic? What a neat way for God to do it!
Q: - ? A: Because there is an instinct, the desire to separate, inherent to the Soul, which is then consciously embraced by Mars. The entire generation that you are born into's Plutos (the bulk of them) will land into the natal house your Pluto is in; which automatically stimulates the instinct to separate, to discover individuality. Which is therefore stimulating the polarity point.
Q: - ? A: No, because their Plutos are in their own houses somewhere. And yet we are also within that same generation. We all have to embrace, as Pluto in Leo folks, Aquarius. See, this is called generational synastry linked with the individual.
SOUTH and NORTH NODES. Earlier we have been saying that the Moon, in astrology, specifically correlates to the egocentric structure of subjective consciousness, the personality. And the South Node of the Moon is what? The prior life egos, i.e. The types of' egocentric structures that the Soul created in order to consciously (Moon) actualize, act upon, make real, the desires resident in the soul itself. This is reflected in the South Node.
Simple example: same 9th house Pluto, individuated state, a whole complex of desires to understand itself in cosmological terms; South Node in 7th. What kinds of personality structures, egocentric structures, did the Soul create to actualize the desires of the 9th house Pluto? T he answer is very simple: that would be an individual who in past life, South Node in 7th, initiated a diversity of relationships (7th house) with teacher types (Pluto in 9th), Such people representing the information or the knowledge that he was seeking, i.e. dependent on external teachers. With the same 9th house Pluto, now South Node in 1st. The desire structure is exactly the same, 9th house. But now the egocentric reality or structure that the Soul was creating is determined through the 1st house. Now we have the exact opposite application, meaning a Soul who created an egocentric structure, subjective consciousness, personality, that had already learned to ask and answer its own questions. It was its own teacher. The desire structure being identical, the way of actualizing being diametrically opposed. (Now you can see yet again why cookbook astrology is pure bullshit. Bullshit, by the way, is Pluto...)
Now, relative to the polarity point, the primary cause, we have a North Node. In effect, the nodal axis can be called modes of operation, vehicles of operation (consciously). So the North Node is going to correlate to what? First of all, the North Node is specifically correlating to the past life egocentric structures that the Soul had created to actualize itself. The North Node in the current birth chart is showing how that past life egocentric structure is evolving in this life, i.e. a new conscious egocentric structure, which is consciously developed in order to actualize, in a conscious way, the polarity point of Pluto.
Here again you have the dynamic tension between past and future, i.e. the transition between South Node and North Node, that is integrated and given personal egocentric form to do so, relative to the natal Moon. The natal Moon. So here again you see the law of the trinity: South Node, North Node, Moon. Example: again, 9th house Pluto, South Node in 7th. So in this current life, the polarity point is in 3rd, North Node in 1st. This is now telling us what? That in this life, that Soul is now going to do what? Make a fundamental transition between being dependent on external teachers and becoming its own teacher. How is this going to be accomplished? It is going to be accomplished relative to the polarity point, meaning it is going to start to philosophically and intellectually argue with all external teachers, instinctually and automatically. Why? It is the Soul's intention. And as it begins to create these kinds of philosophical arguments and confrontations, it is rapidly beginning to evolve and move towards the discovery of its own voice. It will be learning how to ask and answer those questions in this life, and thus breaking the dependency of the South Node. And that dynamic, that stress, is going to be integrated and given a conscious way to do so to feel secure with that, in that natal Moon. That's the point. The ego is an integrating function in subjective consciousness. That is why God made egos for us. It is necessary, it is why you can't get rid of it.
Following our second example: same 9th house Pluto, but South Node in 1st. Now we still have the same evolutionary intention. In this case, where the Soul had already learned to be its own teacher, it would still have been limited by the nature of the questions and answers it was creating, and would have still defined a certain portion of the truth. So now with that polarity point in 3rd and the North Node in 7th, guess what is going to happen in this case.
Q: - ? A: Yes, the symbolism is obviously implying a natural loner: South Node in 1st.
Q: - ? A: The Soul's intention through the 3rd and 7th house is to open up to the entire world of social interaction. It is a Libra archetype. Do you remember when we were talking about New phase/Full phase? Here you have it. And now they have to open up to the whole social sphere: other people, other people's visions, other people's values, other people's beliefs. Learning how to become a social equal. So that, through the polarity point, it is going to create key people in that life, who are again more philosophically evolved, intellectually sophisticated, to find that weak link. Beyond that, they have to learn how to open up to the entire dynamic of being in a relationship. Why? They are used to being alone for a series of lifetimes. That has now reached the point of limit. They can't grow anymore if they just hang out being a loner. The next level of emotional lessons occur right specifically through the dynamic of partnership.
Q: - ? A: No, the Moon will always be limited by its nature. I will show you an example, my own case. I have South Node in 1st and Sag, North Node in 7th and Gemini. It is integrated through a Pisces Moon in 4th. Now, believe me, my attitude early in my life, I was just going to be a monk my whole life. The ruler of my South Node is in 12th. That is my tendency, I am a monk. It is very comfortable, real easy. But God had other intentions here. When I used to even think about the idea of intimate relationship, I'd just about puke. Not me! And then you throw in the potential equation (factor) of children? No way! And yet, I've got a 4th house Moon, squaring those Nodes. This is clearly demonstrating something about skipped steps, isn't it? I mean, even at 33, "No, no kids for me!" I might think about relationship, which I did - I was in a few relationships. But never thinking about having children. And then a certain person came into my life. This is just showing you how fate occurs. This one woman sort of started a period in my life. She had been taking birth control pills and all this stuff, you know, and you would think that the woman could not get pregnant. But the very first time we made love she got pregnant, despite the birth control pills. I had no intention of marrying this woman. This was just Gemini/Sag stuff. And I knew that she conceived at that moment.
And the reason I knew it, now think of the symbol here - 4th house Pisces Moon. After we had made love I put my third eye on her navel chakra, and I saw a green Star of David in my third eye. I had never seen it before and I have never seen it since. That was my son. And check it out: this woman was a Russian Jew. A green Star of David! Now, since that time I have already raised eight kids. I have three biological children, two of which I am still raising, one of which I have never seen. And I have raised six step-children. That is something about recovering skipped steps, isn't it! There is something about emotional reality, ha! There is something about parenting, ha! And, guess what? Every one of these step-kids has a Pisces Moon. Synchronicity or coincidence?
Q: - ? A: Absolutely, even in this life. To me, the whole deal of this life was to transcend the darned thing. Why engage it?
Q: Because the Moon is in Pisces in the 4th, isn't that supposed to be transcendence of the emotions? A: No, not in this particular astrological signature, Moon square the Nodal axis. This comes under the archetype of skipped steps. Any planet squaring the Nodes is skipped steps. And in order for evolution to proceed, the skipped steps must be recovered. So in that particular signature, the emotional skipped steps had to be recovered. And for me as an individual that started with, yes, that 4th house Moon, my own biological mother. That Moon is also squaring Mars in Sag in 2nd, and it is also squaring Uranus in 8th, which, of course, are in opposition, now forming a happy T-square to the Moon. She started sexually abusing me out of the womb, severely. And at age four she tried to scald me to death. At six I was placed in an orphanage. Pisces moon. Now, given that kind of original imprint, do you think that a Soul that has had all this past life background of spiritual development, would in this life consciously make, "Oh yes, I am going to start working on my emotional issues!"? Or do you think that the existing tendency is to revert to existing tendencies, which is to run off to some monastery somewhere, which is exactly what I did, for many years. It is very easy. But, as I say, the intention here is to recover skipped steps!
Q: - ? A: Well, I don't really understand how you are using the word transcendence here.
Q: - ? A: Yes, but the point in this particular case is that there has already been a bunch of lifetimes in which the understanding of life at a transcendent level has already occurred! It is not going to go away. It has been realized and doesn't change. The deal here is not what already has been understood. The primary issue here is to confront emotion as emotion.
Q: - ? A: It was not in a family dynamic as such. There was another past life that I held, that I was considered a spiritual heretic, as a child. It is no different than... How many of you are familiar with the story of Ramakrishna, as an example. When he was a child, he was considered crazy. That was because he was fully enlightened at birth, and as a child his consciousness was so full that all he could do was to hit his head against a post all the time. And of course, even in Indian culture they thought this was nuts. And they actually took him away to the countryside and tied him to a post. And similarly, in another past life I had the same kind of deal going as a child, and in that life I was put in a mental institution. But the mental institutions of old were not like the mental institutions of today, even though today they are bad enough. And in that particular institution, what is now my current life mother was a man in that life, who was in charge of that institution. And in that context I was sexually abused by that man. But that was not based on a specific cause between me and that man in that life. That was a function of 1) being in that environment and 2) that man of his own structure or volition having that kind of sexual perversity within himself. He was acting out that way not just at me, but also at other boys in that institution. That life (which was just a few lives back) was the beginning of this Moon squaring Nodal axis bit, i.e. the Soul trying to say, wait a minute, I have to go backwards in order to go forwards! So the answer to your question is, no, there was no specific personal karma. That is called evolutionary necessity.
